Requested security protocol is not supported

Symptoms:

HMRC have stopped supporting older security methods of TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 which were built into Microsoft Windows operating systems.

HMRC have upgraded their system that requires computers to have this critical TLS 1.2 security for you to be able to submit returns to HMRC system.

Cause:

If you are using Microsoft Windows 7 OS, it is likely that this has not been updated with latest Microsoft Updates.

It is important that you install Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 and above.

How to: Determine which .NET Framework versions are installed

Solution: 

There are a few possible solutions for this:

  1. Run Microsoft Windows Update - The purpose is to ensure all Microsoft .NET Framework are installed.

    Choose Start - All Programs - Windows Update.
    Click the Updates are Available link to see all optional or important updates link.
    Select all available critical updates and install then. If Windows asks for Restart Now, do that.
    Select optional updates that you want to install and then click the OK button.
    Click the Install Updates button.
    Click Restart Now if Windows requires this to be done.

  2. Enable TLS1.2 in Windows 'Internet Options' settings

    Open 'Internet Options' in Windows Control Panel (you can search on Google for how to do this)
    Select 'Advanced' tab in 'Internet Options'
    Scroll down to 'Security'
    Tick 'Use TLS 1.2'
    Click 'Apply' and click 'OK' to close the 'Internet Options' settings screen.

    Install Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 directly. 

  3. Download and install from Microsoft web site
