Gateway Authentication Failure Error 1046

When attempting to submit tax returns online using the 'File by Internet' (FBI) feature, a message "Gateway Authentication Failure" appears.

Message 'Gateway error 1046 Authentication Failure: The supplied user credentials failed validation for the requested service' may be reported during submission of tax returns when one or more of the credentials checked by HMRC via Government Gateway servers cannot be verified hence the Gateway is rejecting your submission attempt.

File By Internet process within the software will read the message relayed back from the Gateway and display a Gateway Authentication Failure message.

If you have encountered the Gateway Authentication Failure message, check the following details have been entered correctly.

For Andica SA100 Self Assessment Software:

  • Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) for the tax payer
  • Gateway User ID (Tax Payers Personal ID or Agents ID)
  • Gateway password (Tax Payers Personal Password or Agents Password)
  • If submitting as an individual, using Personal Gateway User ID and Password, ensure Self Assessment (SA) Service has been activated on HMRC/Gov.uk website. The Service should be listed under 'Services you can use' or 'Your business taxes'.

For Andica SA800 Partnership Tax Returns Software:

  • Partnership Business Tax Reference (UTR)
  • Gateway User ID (ID for the Business or Agents ID)
  • Gateway password (for the Business or Agents Password)
  • If submitting as a Partnership, using Gateway User ID and Password for the Business, ensure Self Assessment (SA) for Partnership Service has been activated on HMRC/Gov.uk website. The Service should be listed under 'Services you can use' or 'Your business taxes'.
Partnership Business UTR, Gateway User ID and Gateway Password are not those of any individual partner within the business.

For Andica SA900 Trust and Estate Tax Returns Software:

  • Trust Tax Reference (UTR)
  • Gateway User ID (for the Trust or Estate or Agents ID)
  • Gateway password (for the Trust or Estate or Agents Password)
  • If submitting as a Trustee using Gateway User ID and Password for the Trust or Estate, ensure Self Assessment (SA) Service for Trust and Estate has been activated on HMRC/Gov.uk website. The Service should be listed under 'Services you can use' or 'Your business taxes'.

For Andica CT600 Corporation Tax Software:

Please ensure that all of the following details have been entered correctly. These reference and ID's are for the Company and not of any individual Directors.
  • Company Tax Reference (should be as shown on the CT603)
  • Gateway User ID (for the Company or Agents ID)
  • Gateway password (for the Company or Agents Password).
  • If submitting as a 'Company' using Gateway User ID and Password for the Company, ensure Corporation Tax Service has been activated on HMRC/Gov.uk website. The Service should be listed under 'Services you can use' or 'Your business taxes'

If you have saved your login credentials (Gateway User ID and Gateway Password) during previous attempts to submit, clear the entries and remove the tick for 'Do you want to save your login credentials?' and enter the Gateway User ID and Password again.

Tax Agents that have saved Gateway Authentication details in Tax adviser screen must also remove the Agents Gateway ID and Password and re-enter the correct details.
